Just my take on the beautiful South American tradition of sugar skulls. Sugar skulls, or calaveras, are a part of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations on from October 31st to November 2nd. They are part of the ofrendas made by families to honor their loved ones, and are decorated with flowers, feathers, and more.
If you’re interested in learning more about the Day of the Dead celebrations or calaveras, I recommend reading this article from culture trip, among countless others.
I’m not of South American descent and I do not own the concept of sugar skulls; I simply love the designs, what they mean, and how they make people feel. I hope that my art respects South American culture and the countless people who participate in the Day of the Dead celebrations globally.
